Research & Programs: Teachers and Guidance Counselors Workshop
The DITI Teachers Workshop is a 5-day summer workshop held on the UNC Charlotte campus. Participants are teachers and
guidance counselors from K-12 institutions throughout North Carolina and Faculty and Diversity/Technology experts will
lead the workshop. A nationally recognized diversity expert will give an invited lecture. Two teaching assistants
will help with the technical assignments. An interdisciplinary approach will be employed throughout the workshop to
provide the following four key elements:
- Background information on gender and race issues in computer science, in technology-related areas, in the culture at large, and in pedagogical approaches;
- Technical knowledge of the use of computer programming, computer applications, and the Internet to enhance classroom learning;
- Specific skills and techniques for integrating technology course materials (e.g., assignments, background lessons) with gender-sensitive pedagogy, classroom practice, and management of peer interactions; and
- Suggestions for creating change in the participants' home institutions.
Throughout each day of the workshop, diversity training sessions and technology training sessions will be conducted.
The intent is to make participants aware of diversity issues in IT education and then immediately demonstrate, by example,
practical methods to provide gender/race-sensitive technology education.
