Research Description:
My research laboratory is currently interested in signal transduction pathways involved in regulating initial cell transformation and progression of hepatocellular carcinoma. Specifically, our studies are interested in how changes in cell signal processing affect the normal cells ability to perform physiological functions in the liver and how these changes (transformation) may affect the rate at which proliferation progresses and/or the resistance of these “damaged” cells to normal mechanisms that delete abnormal cells. In addition, our laboratory is interested in the mechanisms by which alcohol may affect the rate of cell transformation and the potential for plant derived antioxidants as possible agents for use in reducing this risk. In addition, my laboratory is investigating the use of cell encapsulation technology to deliver high circulating cytokine levels in models of HCC as a mechanism to potentially slow tumor progression.
